Your Heating Contractor May Service These Essential Furnace Parts Every Year

If you have a gas furnace, it's a good idea to let a heating contractor service it before cold weather arrives. This gives the contractor a chance to clean and service the parts so your furnace operates safely and efficiently. Here are some important things the heating contractor might check.

The Flue

The flue vents toxic gases out of your house. The pipe runs from your furnace to the outdoors so the gases blend into the outdoor air harmlessly. If the flue gets clogged with animal nests, leaves, or other debris, the gasses may not be able to escape. This could pose a safety risk and also cause your furnace to malfunction. If the heating contractor finds a problem with the flue, they can make repairs right away so the gasses can exit to the outdoors.

The Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger is an important part of your furnace where the heated air mixes with cooler air to be distributed throughout your home. If the exchanger cracks, you might need a new furnace since the exchanger is an expensive part. Plus, a cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide, so it's important to have it checked by a professional for signs of problems. The heating contractor might also pinpoint problems with other parts that can harm the heat exchanger and make repairs so the heat exchanger is protected from damage.

The Ignition Area

The ignition area can get dirty with dust and carbon buildup. When this happens, your furnace may not ignite. These parts should be cleaned annually so you can avoid dealing with a furnace breakdown in the middle of winter. Cleaning the ignition and combustion area also helps your furnace work more efficiently.

The Gas Lines

The heating contractor may also check the gas supply lines to your furnace to make sure they aren't leaking or have any other problems. If your valve has been off all summer, the contractor can restore the gas to your furnace and make sure the furnace ignites the burners properly. This is also a good time to check your carbon monoxide monitor and change the batteries so the monitor is ready to watch over your furnace all winter.

The Blower

In addition to servicing the parts that make heat, the heating contractor will check the blower in your furnace too. The blower is needed to push the heated air into the ducts and throughout your house. The blower may need to be cleaned, tightened, and lubricated. If it has a belt-driven motor, the belt needs to be checked and replaced if it's frayed. The contractor might also check the capacitor and motor since these parts have to be in good shape for the blower to work.
