Your AC requires an annual service call to make sure it works properly. Skipping that call can lead to the following problems.  

1. Poor Air Circulation

Does it seem like your house never gets cool, no matter how long the AC runs or how low it is set? The air in the home may even seem more stagnant than usual. This is often the result of a system clogged with dust, dander, and dirt. Once the filters clog, dust can get into the AC itself, leading to ever-increasing levels of poor airflow. Dirt and debris can also get into the exterior unit, decreasing its ability to cool your home.

2. Increased Allergies

One benefit of an AC is that it helps filter the air, which ideally should help reduce indoor hay fever. Yet, if your sneezing and itchy eyes are getting worse when the AC is on, you have a problem. Dust, dander, and mold is the likely culprit. Your unit can become clogged with these irritants if it isn't serviced and cleaned out annually. Instead of helping your allergies, the AC then becomes the main vector for the irritants.

3. Weird Noises

A unit that needs to be serviced will often begin to make odd noises. You may hear rattling when the fan is running, or perhaps the squeal of a failing belt or a part that needs to be lubricated. Noises can be worse at start-up, which typically means something requires oiling, or they may persist for the entire cooling cycle. Any noises, whether from inside the vents or from the outdoor unit, need to be checked by a repair contractor.

4. Foul Odors

A common issue, particularly in spring, is a foul odor reminiscent of dirty laundry that emanates from the vents when the AC is running. The issue is likely caused by condensation and bacteria in the AC unit, so a full spring service of cleaning is needed to get rid of it. Other bad odors, such as smoke, are even more important to have checked as these can indicate an imminent mechanical failure.

5. High Bills

If your cooling bills have jumped up but your energy rates are the same, the issue is likely with your AC. Skipping the regular maintenance and servicing causes your AC to lose efficiency because it is no longer operating at its peak. Scheduling your annual maintenance visit can save money in the long run.
